Stay tuned as personal statements of those nominated for positions will be posted as they are received.

Internal Vice President

Kim Elmore

“Hello! My name is Kim Elmore, and I’m running for GSAC Internal Affairs VP. I’m a founding member of GSAC, past chair of the PR Commission, and a PhD candidate in Technical Communication and Rhetoric.

If elected Internal Affairs VP, my focus will be to facilitate collaboration between GSAC commissions, officers, and Graduate School administration by maintaining regular communications between commission chairs and officers. I view commission chairs as well as officers as part of the executive council and believe that if every member of GSAC leadership works together on a more regular basis, the crucial work of our commissions—to improve quality of life for Texas Tech graduate students—can be more efficiently done, help more graduate students, and persuade more administrators to act on our behalf.

I am a detail-oriented, active, and congenial leader who can keep track of GSAC internal affairs and communicate with each GSAC member to facilitate interactions among members. I demonstrated these leadership qualities and my commitment to amplifying the voice of graduate students across campus as the chair of the PR commission last year and was named a SGA/GSAC Graduate Student of the Year for my efforts. If elected, I will put the same energy, skills, and commitment into my duties as Internal Affairs VP. As a veteran GSAC representative I can help provide continuity in GSAC leadership and support the increased activities on behalf of graduate students that I expect to see in a maturing organization with so many insightful, skilled, and active new members.

Since I telecommute to GSAC meetings, I believe that the External VP will be a better chair for our monthly full-council working meetings, and there is a mechanism in the GSAC Constitution for me to pass this duty to the External VP if I am elected. Instead, I would volunteer to chair monthly meetings of commission chairs and executive officers, coordinating our efforts to improve graduate life at Texas Tech University. Thank you!”

External Vice President:

Sam Al-Hashmi

“I would like to submit my nomination for the External Vice President position. One of the key essential roles of this position is to be able to spread and promote GSAC in the city of Lubbock, community and other student organizations. The positions would require someone that is able to maneuver and operate among a variation of social networks and to promote GSAC best interest and allows it to benefit from them. Therefore, I believe I would be best suited for this position. I have demonstrated through my membership the ability to promote GSAC functions among variation of of organizations. I also come from an extremely varied professional, academical and cultural organizational. I have served as a member in the following organizations: Society of Industrial and applied mathematics “SIAM”, American society of mechanical engineering “ASME”, Institute of electrical and electronics engineers “IEEE”, Mechanical engineering department graduate students council, Phi theta kappa, Indian students association, Arabic students association, etc. I have also a large social network within the community in diverse forms of professional and skilled individuals. I am able to reach across boundaries of social comfort to create an ever lasting friendships. In my opinion this is an essential quality for the person representing GSAC and our diverse graduate students body. Furthermore, it is essential to be able to recruit friends and supporters for GSAC among our students body and within the community. GSAC is in a key essential transition period. We have demonstrated in the past a strong commitments to the community and our student body by volunteering in several key events, such as arts events and Lubbock habitat. None the less at the moment, we are in need of GSAC to be able to promote its best interest by recruiting supporters in the professional and economical circle of the community. This is essential for us to be able to solidify our importance to our student members and to be play a needed leading role in their professional future. A support from our community would allow us to further expand our events, to assist our student body in different forms, and to be able to create a direct link between the professional circle and graduate students body. If I am selected for the position, I assure you that I shall pursue this with extreme professionalism, dedicatedly and fruitfully. Thank you for your consideration.”

What is the Scholar Retreat?

GSAC’s Scholar Retreat has been developed to help students progress through the difficult writing stages of the dissertation process, towards its completion. By offering a quiet environment and support for intensive, focused writing time, the Retreat provides participants with the structure and motivation to overcome typical roadblocks in the dissertation process. Our goal is to assist each participant in making significant progress toward completing his or her project.

Is this for me?

This event is directed primarily toward students in the final stages of writing their dissertations. In many disciplines, final stages could be defined as the time period after data has been collected. However, individuals working on a dissertation proposal or master’s thesis could also benefit from the structured time, space, professional writing consultation, and motivational support of the program. The Scholars’ Retreat is limited to 12 Texas Tech University graduate students per session.

What should Iexpect?

At the beginning of the Retreat, participants sign individual “contracts” indicating the goal they would like to reach. They then determine mini-goals to help them accomplish the larger project.

For the next five days, participants spend three hours per day writing and working on their dissertation. Writing consultants will be available throughout this time. Midway through the Retreat, we will hold a coffee-hour, bringing together morning and evening participants to chat with each other, share tips, and discuss dissertation-related experiences. It is our hope that this coffee-hour willallow you make connections that can help you establish your own dissertation writing support group after the workshop. Materials will be provided to help guide you through the steps of setting up such a group.

On the last day of the Retreat, the final hour will be devoted to sharing the progress you have made during the Retreat with fellow scholars,as well as examining your progress towardyour goals.

When will the Retreat happen?

For the Spring 2013 semester, there will be two sessions for the Retreat. The first will take place from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM each day April 29-May 3. The second will take place from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM each day April 29-May 3. Any graduate student who is writing his or her dissertation or thesis is welcome to register for this event. Participants may only sign up for only one of the two sessions, and they are expected to attend every day for their session.

The purpose of the Graduate Student Welfare commission is to establish ways in which to improve student life, provide a forum for the communication of grievances, issues, and concerns, and act as a direct link between the GSAC, graduate student organizations, administration, and other groups.

We encourage you to attend our meetings and add your voice!

Bring your 4-legged friends, monsters and goblins and join us for this family friendly event. With 2 distance options (2K9 – 1.2 miles or 5 miles), there is an event for everyone. The “family friendly” course of 2K9 (1.2 miles) will take you along the beautiful Canyon Lake 6. The more challenging 5 mile course will have you running through the City of Lubbock Cemetery and paying tribute to Lubbock’s most famous son, Buddy Holly. The course will conclude with a loop around Canyon Lake 6.

When you register at www.WestTexasEndurance.com, please mention “GSAC” in notes section. Fees are $20 for kids, $27 for adults with dog, and $25 for adults without dogs. Dog supplies will be collected and donated to Haven Animal Care Shelter.

Festivities start at 8:30AM and include a dog costume contest. Volunteers are still needed. Participants and volunteers will receive a free long-sleeve tee.
